The working plans were handed over to the Deutschen Werkstätten Hellerau at the end of December 1999, and thanks to continued support from Kästner-friends and interested parties, the production of the first module, the museum core, could start. On the 23/02/2000, Erich Kästner's 101st birthday, we celebrated the completion of the first stage of construction and the start of day-to-day museum work. The first module of the museum structure has its home in Villa Augustin, which belonged to Kästner's uncle. In addition to exhibition space for originals and a library for up to 300 books, the core also offers material on Erich Kästner's life and works thanks to audio, video and computer technology with internet access. During the first 100 days, over 3,500 visitors explored the museum, and generous donations and gifts were received. The premises in Villa Augustin allows the museum to organise a wide range of events and projects.
